The name of the Age is believed to refer to the lunar-like atmosphere of the island (cf. selene) but most likely refers to the huge crystals found in this age (Selenitic means Of or pertaining to selenite, where.

At 34:32 Rand and Robyn Miller discuss the original plans for the mine cart maze in the Selenitic Age of Myst. Originally, they were planning on what they describe as a Dr. Seuss like underground walking maze in which you would press buttons at intersections to hear a sound Now compare that to puzzles like the underground maze in Myst's Selenitic Age. There is zero logic behind the fact that different sounds tell you the direction you need to take. There's zero logic to the behavior of the books in the library. And so on. #10. Obtuse at times, but there's a logic behind everything - there's nothing that you can't figure out that isnt provided in the game itself (well maybe the selenitic age opening puzzle, if you're tone-deaf/not savvy with musical tones). Riven is better, though (and the better Myst game period These contain the raw feeling of what the age is. Of note is the Selenitic Mystgate: the track from the game is somber and empty and reflects the desitude of the age. The bonus track Early Selenitic Mystgate is very lively and in my view the best on the CD. Most of the other tracks take place on myst island and invoke mystery (no pun intended)
